For all we

It wasn't as if
we knew, all we knew
was the light that gushed
in the big square window
for all we knew it was winter
we were cold.

The row of raw
candlesticks flooded us with
hours, upon mornings spent
in wet soles, lungfuls of mist
to start each day. For all we

knew we were perfectly
ordinary, matter of fact
on the pavement we chatted the
concrete levelers waiting til
we finally left.

Put those glass ashtrays to use
now our uses are different and
no one can say if
the cliff ahead is worth
arriving early for

but that we were
for all we knew
we were waiting for
something to happen.
